HBO is reportedly in advanced negotiations with acclaimed actor John Lithgow, known for his role as Lord Farquaad in Shrek, to portray the iconic Hogwarts headmaster Albus Dumbledore in their upcoming Harry Potter series. While HBO remains tight-lipped, confirming only that they will announce casting decisions as deals are finalized, Variety reports Lithgow is nearing a deal. This follows November reports naming Mark Rylance as a top contender for the role.
"We understand the intense interest surrounding this project and the resulting speculation," an HBO spokesperson stated. "As pre-production progresses, we will only confirm casting details upon completion of contracts."
Lithgow's extensive filmography includes roles in The World According to Garp, Terms of Endearment, Footloose, Dexter, and The Crown, among many others.
The series will prioritize British talent, mirroring the films. This is perhaps unsurprising given J.K. Rowling's reported "significant involvement" in the casting process.
Announced in April 2023, the Harry Potter series aims to be a faithful adaptation of the novels, promising a richer, more detailed narrative than the films allowed. Executive producers Francesca Gardiner and Mark Mylod (the latter also known for Game of Thrones) will oversee the series' direction and writing.
