In a surprising revelation, Elon Musk, the world's richest man and owner of X/Twitter, has admitted to using account boosting services in the action RPGs Diablo 4 and Path of Exile 2. Screenshots of a private conversation between Musk and a YouTuber were shared, confirming his involvement in this form of cheating, which violates the terms of service of both games. Account boosting involves a player logging into another's account to elevate their rank, a practice strictly prohibited by game developers like Blizzard Entertainment and Grinding Gear Games.
Following Musk's admission, both Blizzard and Grinding Gear Games have been pressed for comments on whether they will take action against Musk's accounts. However, both companies have declined to comment on the matter, with Blizzard stating it does not discuss individual player account behaviors or enforcement actions. This has led to a wave of criticism from the gaming community, with many players expressing disappointment and questioning the integrity of the games' terms of service enforcement.
On forums and social platforms, players have voiced their concerns. One Path of Exile player on the official forum questioned the enforcement of the terms of service, asking if the developers are allowing billionaires to bypass rules as a vanity project. Similarly, on Battle.net, players have called out the apparent inconsistency in rule enforcement, wondering why Musk's account has not been banned despite his open admission of cheating.
Musk, who has previously boasted about his gaming skills, including claiming to be in the top 20 players worldwide for Diablo 4, has come under scrutiny. His high-level achievements in both games, including a hardcore level 97 character in Path of Exile 2, have been questioned, especially given his busy schedule managing Tesla, SpaceX, X/Twitter, and his recent role as Donald Trump's efficiency tsar. A livestream in early January further fueled doubts when Musk appeared to lack understanding of Path of Exile 2's mechanics.
The controversy deepened when a video by Diablo player NikoWrex showed Musk admitting to account boosting, citing the need to compete with players in Asia. Musk defended his actions by stating that top accounts require multiple people playing to win leveling races, and he questioned the need for an apology. In response to the allegations, musician Grimes, who shares three children with Musk, defended his gaming achievements, claiming to have witnessed his prowess firsthand.
Further allegations surfaced when Musk's Path of Exile 2 character was seen active in the game while he was attending Trump's inauguration in Washington, raising more questions about his involvement in boosting.
