Pearl Abyss, the developer behind the anticipated action-adventure game Crimson Desert, has reportedly declined a PlayStation exclusivity deal with Sony. The decision maintains the company's commitment to independent publishing.
In a statement to Eurogamer, Pearl Abyss clarified its self-publishing strategy, emphasizing the anticipated profitability. While acknowledging and appreciating ongoing discussions with various partners, the company reaffirmed its intention to independently release Crimson Desert. This follows a previous announcement during a quarterly earnings call.
No official release date or definitive platform list has been confirmed. However, a playable build will be showcased to media this week in Paris, followed by a public demonstration at G-Star in November. While speculation points to a PC, PlayStation, and Xbox release around Q2 2025, Pearl Abyss stresses that any release date information currently circulating is purely speculative.
September investor meetings revealed Sony's attempt to secure PS5 exclusivity, potentially delaying or preventing an Xbox release. Pearl Abyss ultimately opted for self-publishing, believing it to be the most lucrative approach.
