Monster Hunter Wilds: Unveiling the Oilwell Basin and its Fiery Inhabitants
In an exclusive interview with IGN, Monster Hunter Wilds directors Yuya Tokuda and Kaname Fujioka shed light on a new, vertically structured locale: the Oilwell Basin, and its fearsome ruler, the Nu Udra. This unique environment contrasts with the series' typical horizontally expansive maps.
Fujioka explains the Oilwell Basin's vertical design, a departure from the Windward Plains and Scarlet Forest. The depth brings a gradient of environments, from oil-slick swamps at the surface to magma-filled depths. Tokuda adds that the basin transforms during the "Plenty" event, resembling an underwater volcanic ecosystem, drawing inspiration from Monster Hunter World's Coral Highlands. The unique flora and fauna further enhance the area's distinct character, teeming with life beneath a seemingly barren exterior.
The Oilwell Basin's apex predator, the Nu Udra, is a colossal, octopus-like creature with a flammable, slimy body. Its powerful tentacles ensnare prey before unleashing devastating fire attacks. Fujioka reveals the design intention: a modified aquatic creature with a demonic aesthetic, complete with horn-like head protrusions. Tokuda highlights the unique battle music, incorporating elements reminiscent of black magic. The Nu Udra presents a formidable challenge, immune to Flash Bombs and capable of rapid-fire attacks, both targeted and area-of-effect.
Beyond the Nu Udra, the Oilwell Basin houses other formidable monsters. The Ajarakan, a fiery, monkey-like creature, employs martial arts-inspired attacks. The Rompopolo, a globular monster with needle-like mouthparts, utilizes toxic gases, inspired by the stereotypical mad scientist aesthetic. Surprisingly, its drops yield "cute" equipment. Finally, Gravio, a returning monster from Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate, fits seamlessly into the volcanic environment.
With these exciting reveals, anticipation builds for Monster Hunter Wilds' release on February 28th.
