Exciting news for fans of the iconic franchise: Power Rangers is reportedly gearing up for a live-action series set to premiere on Disney+. The Wrap has revealed that Jonathan E. Steinberg and Dan Shotz, renowned for their work on the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series, are in discussions to write, showrun, and produce this anticipated revival under the banners of Disney+ and 20th Century TV.
Hasbro, the current owner of the Power Rangers brand, is aiming to reinvent the franchise to captivate a new generation while keeping long-time fans engaged and satisfied. This move reflects Hasbro's vision to breathe new life into a beloved series that has been a staple of childhood entertainment since its inception.
In 2018, Hasbro acquired the Power Rangers franchise along with other assets from Saban Properties in a deal valued at $522 million. At the time of the acquisition, Hasbro's chairman and CEO, Brian Goldner, expressed enthusiasm about the brand's "tremendous upside potential." He highlighted plans to leverage the Power Rangers across Hasbro's entire Brand Blueprint, encompassing toys and games, consumer products, digital gaming, entertainment, and a global retail presence.
The acquisition followed the disappointing performance of the 2017 movie reboot, which attempted to give Power Rangers a darker, grittier edge in hopes of launching a series of sequels. However, the film's poor box office results led to the cancellation of these plans, prompting Saban to sell the rights to Hasbro shortly thereafter.
In addition to the Power Rangers project, Hasbro is also venturing into other high-profile endeavors. These include a live-action Dungeons & Dragons series titled The Forgotten Realms in development at Netflix, an animated Magic: The Gathering series also being crafted for Netflix, and plans for a Magic: The Gathering cinematic universe, showcasing Hasbro's ambitious expansion across various entertainment platforms.
