The C button rumored to be featured on the Nintendo Switch 2 may be dedicated to chat-related functionality, according to a recent report. This revelation could provide crucial insights into one of the most intriguing aspects of Nintendo's upcoming console.
Since late 2024, leaks about the Switch 2 have been rampant, largely due to the console entering mass production around that time. These leaks consistently show the console sporting an additional button labeled with a dark gray "C," located on the right Joy-Con just below the home button. Despite the frequent leaks, the purpose of this mysterious button remained unclear until now.
Recent datamining efforts, detailed by a rapidly growing Discord server focused on the Switch 2, have uncovered references to a feature code-named "Campus" within the latest version of the Switch OS. This feature is believed to be linked to group and voice chat support for Nintendo Switch Online (NSO) subscribers.
The same source indicates that Campus will enable screen sharing and allow chat groups to include up to 12 users. Given that the feature's codename starts with a "C," it's plausible that the C button on the Switch 2 could be related to "chat" rather than "Campus." This new information challenges the popular fan theory that the C button might be used for casting the Switch 2's screen to other devices.
Since group and voice chats require internet connectivity, it's likely that if the Switch 2 includes these features, they would be exclusive to NSO subscribers. However, this remains speculative, especially considering the original Switch's design, which deliberately avoided such functionalities to maintain a kid-friendly environment. Reintroducing features like the Miiverse text chat could potentially introduce issues that Nintendo might prefer to avoid.
The true purpose of the C button on the Nintendo Switch 2, if it exists, may soon be revealed. According to multiple sources, the Switch 2 is set to be officially announced this Thursday, January 16.
