The unveiling of the Nintendo Switch 2 has set the gaming community abuzz, particularly with the revelation of its increased size over its predecessor. The trailer showcases the transformation from the original Switch, where the Joy-Cons detach, and the tablet section expands into the new, larger form. This significant size increase indicates Nintendo's shift towards larger portable devices, aligning with the likes of the Steam Deck and iPad, and moving away from the compact handhelds it was once known for.

While Nintendo has not yet released official dimensions, we can estimate the size based on the trailer and a recent leak. At CES 2025, we had the opportunity to examine a Switch 2 mock-up by peripheral designer Genki. Although we couldn't verify the design's accuracy at the time, the trailer confirms that it closely matches the actual console. Thus, our measurements from CES are likely a reliable approximation of the Switch 2's final dimensions.

So, how big is the Switch 2? Here's our detailed guide:

Nintendo Switch 2 Screen Size

Based on our estimations, the **Switch 2 boasts an 8-inch screen**. This measurement reflects the diagonal size of the display (excluding bezels), a standard for screen dimensions. This size corroborates an earlier 2024 rumor. Consequently, we predict the screen to be approximately **177mm wide and 99mm tall**.

If these estimates hold true, the Switch 2's screen would be nearly 30% larger diagonally than the original's 6.2-inch LCD, and **66% larger in overall area**. This substantial upgrade could enhance the gaming experience significantly, provided the display quality remains high.

In comparison to other handhelds, the Switch 2's screen surpasses the Switch Lite's 5.5-inch LCD by 45% diagonally and 111% in surface area. Against the Switch OLED's 7-inch display, it's 14% larger diagonally and 30% larger in total area.

With the advent of portable PCs like the Steam Deck, competition has intensified. The original Steam Deck and its OLED variant both feature 7-inch and 7.4-inch screens, respectively, but with a 16:10 aspect ratio. The Switch 2's 8-inch screen, however, would be 8% larger diagonally and 11% larger in overall area than the Steam Deck OLED's display.

Nintendo Switch 2 Overall Console Size

The larger screen necessitates a bigger console overall. The original Switch already requires sizable pockets, and the Switch 2 will likely demand even more space—perhaps fitting only in cargo pants or a bag.

Our measurements of the Genki mock-up at CES indicated a length of just over 10.5 inches (including Joy-Cons) and a height of 4.5 inches. By scaling images from the trailer to match our photos and measuring them, we estimate the Switch 2 to be about **265mm long and 115mm tall**.

For context, the original Switch measures 239mm in length and 102mm in height. Therefore, the Switch 2 could be approximately **25% larger** than its predecessor. It's also about 61% larger than the Switch Lite (208mm x 91mm) and roughly 12% smaller than the Steam Deck (298mm x 117mm).

Although we couldn't measure the depth precisely, the Switch 2 appears to retain the original's half-inch thickness, meaning its footprint will be significantly larger while maintaining a similar profile depth.

Nintendo Switch 2 Joy-Con Size

The trailer's transformation animation suggests that the new Joy-Cons will retain the original width but grow taller. Using our scaled image methodology, we estimate the new **Switch 2 Joy-Cons to be approximately 32mm wide and 115mm tall**—the same width as the originals but 13mm taller to fit the larger console. This would make the new Joy-Cons about **13% larger** than before.

Nintendo Switch 2 Screen Unit Size

Subtracting the Joy-Con dimensions from the overall console size, we estimate the **Switch 2 screen unit to be 200mm long and 115mm tall**. This is roughly **31% larger** than the original Switch's screen unit.

This size accommodates the 8-inch 16:9 screen with an estimated 11mm bezel on each side and 8mm bezel along the top and bottom, slimmer on the sides compared to the original Switch.

These estimates are based on our best efforts and may differ from the official dimensions when released by Nintendo. However, given our experience with the Genki mock-up, we are confident that the Switch 2 will be around 25% larger than the original Switch when we finally get our hands on it later this year.
