Rift-based games usually spell trouble, but Avid Games' Eerie Worlds is a delightful exception. This highly anticipated sequel to Cards, the Universe and Everything offers a monster-themed tactical CCG experience focused on fun and learning.
Eerie Worlds features a visually diverse roster of monsters, each inspired by real-world mythological and folkloric horrors.
The game boasts an impressive range of creatures, encompassing Japanese Yokai (like Jikininki and Kuchisake), Slavic monsters (such as Vodyanoy and Psoglav), Bigfoot, Mothman, the Nandi Bear, El Chupacabra, and countless others from global folklore. Each card includes detailed, well-researched descriptions, enhancing the learning experience.
The game's strategic depth is amplified by four Alliances (Grimbald, Zerrofel, Rivin, and Synnig) and multiple Hordes, allowing for diverse monster properties and tactical possibilities.
Players build their "Grimoire," a personal monster collection, by merging duplicate cards. The game initially offers 160 basic cards, with many more accessible through merging, and additional cards planned for the near future.
Avid Games has committed to releasing two more Hordes in the coming months, ensuring Eerie Worlds remains a dynamic and engaging experience.
Gameplay involves a nine-card deck (eight monsters and one world card), played over nine 30-second turns. Players must make critical decisions regarding mana usage and synergistic combinations.
